Following its launch of a 36-ton excavator (the SWE 365F) and a 9-ton compact model with variable angle boom (the SWE 90UF-2PB) in the last three months of 2021, Sunward is continuing to innovate and to extend its excavator range. This time it has added a 1.7-ton mini-excavator with cab (or canopy). The new SWE 17F targets users in public works, construction and landscaping.
Sunward, the specialists in mini excavators
With the arrival of the SWE 17F 1.7 ton mini excavator with cab, Sunward, the European market specialists in mini excavators, now offers no fewer than 7 models in the mini segment (from 0.8 to 3.5 tons). The SWE 17F’s engine conforms to the latest European Stage V emission control legislation as indeed do those of all other models in the range.
A combination of low weight and power
Sunward has chosen to equip its latest model with a Yanmar 3TNV80-SSSU engine. Sunward has extensive experience of this Yanmar TNV Stage V 3-cylinder power unit, as it is also fitted to the brand’s SWE 18UF and SWE 20F models. The engine contributes to the reliability, comfort and profitability of the new model thanks to its reduced fuel consumption, noise and vibration.
With a net power output of 13.4 kW and a weight ranging from 1,640 kg (with canopy) to 1,780 kg (with cab), the SWE 17F is both powerful and lightweight.
With economy in mind, the SWE 17F features automatic switching from high to low range whenever traction and ground conditions demand. Operators therefore enjoy a smoother ride when maneuvering and using the blade. When climbing a gradient or negotiating an obstacle, for example, the SWE 17F’s speed range selection system automatically engages the slow range to boost traction as resistance increases, then automatically switches back to the high range to allow faster travel when conditions normalize. Because operators do not have to select the speed range manually, they can relax and concentrate more effectively on the job in front of them.
With a view to protecting the engine, the SWE 17F also boasts an automatic alarm coupled with an automatic engine stop feature that kick in if the engine becomes too hot or low oil pressure is detected.
Carefully selected key components
The hydraulic system is often thought of as the heart of an excavator. That is why Sunward only sources hydraulic components from premium brands.
Sunward has chosen to equip the SWE 17F with a HENGLI hydraulic pump, travel motors and swing motor. HENGLI pumps and hydraulic components are famous for their efficiency, compact size and excellent reliability.
HENGLI’s acclaimed variable displacement axial piston pump is located under the machine’s hood. With a flow rate of 67.2 l/min and an operating pressure of 245 bar (24.5 MPa), this pump gives operators excellent breakout and digging force, ensuring efficiency in all working conditions. For maximum flexibility and performance, the pump also features a Load Sensing system that adapts functioning to suit load and to offer precision control and low fuel consumption irrespective of ground type and equipment.
A mini excavator with the performance of a far larger machine
So what about performance? With its exceptional breakout force (over 21 kN at the bucket and 12 kN at the dipper), the SWE 17F is more than able to compete with other machines in its class.
When it comes to digging, the special design of the SWE 17F’s boom cylinder gives the machine a reach of almost 4 meters (3,883 mm).
A versatile machine
Sunward’s design and R&D teams have made the SWE 17F both attractive and versatile.
The variable width undercarriage can be adjusted from 990 mm to 1,360 mm for maximum stability and operator comfort under all working conditions and for all operations – lifting, loading, backfilling and digging.
An exceptional weight/power ratio, even in the version with cab, means that the SWE 17F generates low ground pressure and can perform efficiently even on sites with limited access and low interior floor loading.
The SWE 17F comes with an auxiliary hydraulic circuit for a breaker or drill attachment as standard.
Finally, its light weight makes the machine easy to transport. Operators can even carry lightweight buckets and hydraulic attachments on the same trailer.
Uncompromising comfort and safety
An all-new enclosed cab provides a comfortable work environment and ensures maximum operator efficiency.
Inside the cab, there is plenty of leg room and a comfortable seat. Man and machine work in perfect synergy and without fatigue thanks to advanced ergonomics.
Large windows permit excellent all-round visibility. The glass roof even offers good visibility for overhead work. The front window slides up and down.
Start driving the SWE 17F and you will immediately appreciate the attention paid to operator comfort: this mini excavator is really silent in operation.
And care for the operator, of course, means putting safety first. For a start, the cab conforms fully to all applicable regulations and safety legislation. The SWE 17F also incorporates a safety system for engine starting, a seat belt and a rotating beacon (version with cab). Finally, 2 LED work lights (one on the boom and one on the front of the cab) are fitted as standard.
Easy maintenance
Daily maintenance is extremely simple and can be completed from the ground thanks to a swinging door that provides quick and easy access to the engine compartment.
The seat also tips up to allow access to the machine’s electrical components.
Stylish and made to last
Last but not least, in addition to a range of technical advantages, Sunward’s industrial design team have made the SWE 17F a particularly attractive machine. Well-fitting bodywork parts and a refined, streamlined design emphasize the compact dimensions of the Sunward SWE 17F and make the generous space inside the cab even more surprising.
This machine is made not just to look good but to last too. Thanks to an integral casting system, the new boom foot boasts far greater structural strength than welded steel plate types.
The hydraulic hoses are protected by steel spring guards to prevent scratching and damage, and the boom cylinder itself is protected by a metal plate. Last by not least, the main hydraulic lines pass through the boom foot for added protection.
Operators will therefore be able to enjoy using this little jewel for many years to come.
